Creating a Low-Maintenance Garden: Hard Landscaping Solutions for Busy Lives

We all love the idea of a beautiful garden, somewhere to relax with a morning coffee, entertain friends on warm evenings or simply enjoy an outdoor space. But the reality?  Busy schedules, family life and endless garden upkeep can quickly turn that dream into hard work for some of us.

The good news is that you can have a stunning garden that fits around your schedule.  With clever hard landscaping and planting choices, you can create an outdoor space that looks attractive all year round while dramatically cutting down on mowing, weeding, watering and general upkeep if that’s not your idea of fun.

At Hambrooks Garden Centre, we’re seeing more and more customers looking for practical, stylish solutions that make gardening that little bit easier, so here are our top tips.

Replace (Part of) Your Lawn

We all love a beautiful lawn but they can take some attention to keep them looking their best. Porcelain paving offers a sleek finish for patios and seating areas, while decorative aggregates and slate chippings provide texture and colour with very little upkeep.

For many homeowners, swapping even half a lawn for hard landscaping can significantly reduce maintenance costs over time, not to mention save hours of work each month. Potentially, a gravel area with some drought-tolerant planting may make your garden more resilient and more pollinator friendly anyway!

Create a Stylish Gravel Garden

Gravel gardens are becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason. They combine practicality with striking visual appeal and work beautifully in both modern and cottage-style gardens.

Pair decorative gravel or slate chippings with architectural plants such as lavender, grasses, euphorbia or agapanthus for a garden that looks intentional and elegant without needing constant care. Gravel also helps suppress weeds and improves drainage, making it especially useful in sunny or dry areas.

A gravel garden often costs less to install than a large patio and typically requires far less maintenance than traditional flower beds or lawns.

Build Relaxing Seating Areas

Sometimes the simplest way to improve a garden is to create somewhere inviting to sit and enjoy it. Railway sleepers can be used to build raised beds, rustic seating or defined entertaining spaces, helping to give structure and purpose to the garden.

Pair these areas with paving or decorative stone to create attractive patios and low-maintenance seating spaces that can be enjoyed throughout the summer. By reducing large planted areas and focusing on practical, durable materials, you can create a garden that feels welcoming without demanding too much of your time.  (And don’t forget some lighting so you can enjoy your garden after dark too!)

Add Structure with Paths and Edging

Stepping stone paths through low-maintenance planting areas can transform both the appearance and practicality of a garden. They create flow, protect planting areas from foot traffic and add character to even smaller spaces.

Border edging is another simple but effective solution. Stone or metal edging creates crisp lines between lawns, gravel, and planting beds, helping prevent grass from spreading and reducing the need for constant trimming and tidying.

Use Decorative Stone for Instant Impact

Decorative cobbles, slate chippings, and aggregates can all be used to create focal points and texture throughout the garden. Whether used around pots, in dry stream features, or as mulch around plants, they help retain moisture, suppress weeds, and give the garden a professionally finished appearance.  (Add a weed suppressing membrane underneath and you’ll make extra sure!)
