Tips on choosing the right pot or planter for your garden
Whether you have the luxury of a large garden or the simplicity of a small balcony or doorstep, chances are that you use pots or planters to brighten your outside space. With so many options to choose from, finding the right pot or planter can be a bit tricky. From size and weight to material and design, there’s a lot to consider. Here’s our handy guide to help you pick the best pots to suit your plant and your space.
Size Matters: getting the right fit
One of the most important factors to consider when selecting a pot or planter is size. You want to make sure the pot is big enough to accommodate the roots of your plant – and any potential growth - but not so large that it becomes difficult to manage.
Therefore, unless you want to be repotting your plants regularly, you’ll probably want to choose a pot that is large enough to allow for some natural growth. Of course, upsizing your pots from time to time is not a bad thing!
Some plants – like sweet peas or larger shrubs – have naturally deep-growing roots so you’ll also want to select a pot that is deep enough for them. Other plants, typically small herb plants and roses, have much more shallow-growing roots, so a wider, thinner pot would suit them well.
It’s also essential to leave room for drainage. Most plants – unless they are specifically water or bog plants – don’t like to sit with their roots constantly wet so allowing some depth of pot for water to drain down will make them happier. All outdoor pots should have drainage holes in the bottom, or they will quickly just become very small ponds!
Material: What’s Best for Your Plants?
When choosing a pot, the material is one of the most important considerations, as it affects drainage, insulation, and overall plant health. If your pot is going to live outside all year, it’s really important to check that it will be frost-proof, too.
Terracotta
There is a reason terracotta pots are a classic choice, with their warm, earthy colour and rustic appearance. They’re great for plants that need good drainage, as terracotta is porous and allows moisture to evaporate.
Wooden Planters
Wooden planters, often made from treated timber or cedar, are a great choice for adding a natural, rustic feel to your garden. They provide good insulation, keeping the soil cooler in summer and warmer in winter.
Stone and Concrete
Stone and concrete pots are incredibly durable and weather-resistant. They’re ideal for large plants or trees that need more stability. While they’re heavy and difficult to move, they can last for years if properly cared for.
Fibreglass, Resin and recycled Plastics
These materials are lightweight yet durable, offering a modern aesthetic. They can mimic the look of more traditional materials like stone, wood, or terracotta but without the weight.
To conclude
Have fun picking out pots, and don’t be afraid to experiment with different styles and materials to create the perfect look for your garden!
