(R) Acer Plat. Drummondii 15L
Acer platanoides 'Drummondii' is a popular, deciduous variety of Norway maple. Its large, maple-shaped leaves turn a dark green as they mature, with attractive creamy-white edges. The leaves turn a striking orange in autumn before they fall, putting on a stunning seasonal display. The tree is a vigorous grower and can reach heights/widths of 12 metres if given the space. It tends to a more rounded habit. It also copes very well with pollution, making a great tree for urban gardens. It bears small yellow flowers in late Spring.
Fully hard in the UK, it will prefer a moist but well-drained soil in a sunny spot, although it will cope with some shade. No routine pruning will be required, just remove any dead, damaged or crossing branches in late autumn or winter when the tree is fully dormant (November – January).
Sold as a small sapling, about 1.5 metres tall, plant it as soon as you can, so long as the soil is not frozen or water-logged. Incorporate plenty of garden compost in the hole and use a tree stake to secure it until it has established. Water well.
