(M) Cotinus Royal Purple 2-3L
Cotinus coggygria is also known as the ‘Smoke Tree’ because of the feathery flowers (inflorescences) which look a bit like plumes of smoke. This variety is called ‘Royal Purple’ because of its stunning, deep purple leaves, which turn redder and drop in the autumn. It was awarded a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) ‘Award of Garden Merit’ for its versatility and popularity with gardeners. It is also great for pollinators, providing nectar and pollen for bees and other insects.
Given the space, Cotinus can reach up to 8 metres tall, given 10-20 years and the space and growing conditions to do so. It will grow in any soil but prefers moist but well-drained conditions. Although not a native plant, it is hardy, even in severe UK winters, and will tolerate full sun or partial shade. It is low maintenance, requiring only a trim for shape in late winter or early spring. It will make an excellent feature tree in any garden, providing architectural structure or a focal point. It bears its ‘smoky’ flowers in the summer and carries purple berries in the autumn. Cotinus are generally pest-free. Sold as an established 3 litre specimen, please plant as soon as possible after purchase.
